Chapter Eight

Tuesday, November 7th.

Lake Charles. Louisiana.

Annie woke up next to Terry Russell’s muscular body. The guy was quiet and calm and rational. Easy to see how he could teach high school and keep a handle on a classroom full of teens.

A raging dynamo between the sheets. She’d never met a nicer, more considerate man, or a better lover and she’d been with a lot of men—too many, as she thought back on it.

When you lost count—that was too many.

She slipped out of bed, picked up her phone from the nightstand and tiptoed into the ensuite bathroom. A dozen new texts waited for her attention, and she had no intention of answering any of them—unless they were from the kids.

Terry was out of bed, pulling a pair of clean boxers out of his top drawer when she came back to the bedroom. Naked, he pulled her into his arms and kissed her. “Best night I’ve ever had,” he whispered.

“Thanks. You were stellar, Terry. Never better.”

He stepped into the boxers and yanked them up. “I’m going to start a pot of coffee and then I’d better pack a bag.” He grinned. “How many nights?”

“Let’s say two and if I still can’t get in to see Tommy at the trauma center, then three. I brought enough for two or three days.”

Terry laughed. “I’m still finding it hard to believe you’re here in my house, Annie.” Almost to the door, he turned, crossed the room, and pulled her into his arms again. His biceps fairly bulged as he gathered her close to him. Slim waist and rock-hard abs. For forty-five, he was the poster boy for fitness. He covered her mouth with his own and unleashed a lot of pent-up passion.

“Best surprise I’ve ever had. I should’ve got a haircut this past week.” He laughed.

“I love your hair longer like that. Leave it. You look good to me just as you are.”

“Women in Lake Charles haven’t been saying that to me a lot.”

“Those women don’t know what they’re missing,” said Annie. “I’ll jump in the shower while you make coffee.”

Donovan Ranch. Elgin.

Riding her horse, Paladin, Gillette covered the distance between her place and Farrell’s in about ten minutes. They didn’t live too far apart.

The ride was planned, and Neil and Farrell had Ranger and Diablo saddled and ready to go when Gillette rode down the lane.

“We should do this more often,” said Neil. “I don’t take Ranger out enough.”

“Let’s take them out for a ride every day while I’m off work,” said Farrell. “We can’t sit on our asses and do nothing.”

“I’m starting school on Monday,” said Neil, “but it won’t be all day, every day. We can still get a lot of riding in before it gets too cold.”

“Have you talked to Liam about the classes?”

“Yep. He’s coming over and we’re going to sort it all out. I’m happy that I’ll know somebody in the same classes.”

“You realize the girls in your classes will be all over you, right?” asked Farrell. “They’ll be swarming around you like bears looking for honey.
